I was a bit shocked at that news, when it first got reported as well. He became a whistleblower not too long ago, and got quite the attention from citizen journalists, until he faded away. Some pics of a resort in Turkey with what looked like altar surfaced shortly, could've been a deadman's switch? I didn't follow-up.. However, I've also heard people close to him that he was on the edge for some time.
He could've been suicidal; a targetted individual, or got murdered, or a combination of the three.
Hope he's doing better now at least.
He had just posted a video that stated he was not suicidal he said it over and over again! He knew they were coming for him I think

Not knowing this man or his story, I read a couple articles that dropped me into a Crispin Glover essay which seems to be primarily an accusation against Spielberg, but is written well enough for me to once again reaffirm my respect for this inspired, an perhaps touched, artist.
