In general, there seems to be something deeper about the post office that is hidden from us.

A couple threads I'm aware of;
-postal stamps have been traded as currency throughout history (not just USPS related) because the are small, standardized, and can be exchanged for a known service
-USPS was an integral part of the US system of truly public banking
-the postmaster general is a powerful position that I've heard some claim was once in the line of succession but has now been removed or downgraded
-the USPS contemporary financial woes come from a unique demand to fund future pensions at levels that no other public or private organization adheres to, this is part of a decades long effort to ruin the postal service by the legislature
-postal police are central to combatting various financial crimes and frauds

So what's going on here? Is there something more to the USPS story that is being hidden from us or am I just a Looney toon?
