I have an answer to why panspermia might be a preferred narrative. If it is accepted that human life originated elsewhere--perhaps they will find life on an asteroid, or even weirder, human DNA--then it can be argued that we don't belong here and have no rights to live on Earth or exploit its resources. Fits right in with Great Reset/Green New Deal/Sustainable Development BS. Perhaps when they prove "aliens" exist, the aliens will be us.
